SEEDS, SEASONS, and SECOND CHANCES

There are moments in life when we can trace a journey back to a single seed.

For me, that seed was planted nearly four decades ago.

Thirty-eight years ago, I made a poignant decision that would ultimately change the way I lived. Inspired by a professor in a college nutrition class, I chose a more plant-centered way of eating. It wasn't driven by trends or a desire to follow a particular path. Rather, it was a gentle pull toward a simpler, more intentional way of life ~ one rooted in nourishment, gratitude, and a deeper connection to the natural world. Looking back, I realize that choice was the first seed in a garden that was still years away from blooming.

At the time, I could never have imagined where that decision would lead.

What began in the kitchen gradually found its way into the garden. I discovered the joy of growing herbs for a meal, harvesting vegetables for the family table, and learning that some of life’s greatest pleasures come from the simplest things. A handful of freshly picked lemon basil. A ripe heirloom tomato warmed by the sun. The fragrance of our white lightning roses at dusk.

Season after season, the garden became more than a place to grow food. It became a teacher.

It taught patience when seeds were slow to emerge. It taught resilience after storms. It taught gratitude during seasons of abundance. Most importantly, it reminded me that growth rarely happens all at once. It unfolds quietly, often unseen, beneath the surface.

Over time, that little garden and the lessons it offered grew into something much larger.

Le Petit Jardin was born from a desire to share what I loved most ~ simple food, seasonal living, beautiful flowers, homemade preserves, freshly baked breads, and the joy that comes from gathering around a table. It became a place where the garden and kitchen could meet, where stories could be shared, and where old-fashioned values of hospitality and nourishment could flourish.

Yet even then, another seed was waiting to be planted.

As the garden grew, so did a question in my heart: What if the abundance we enjoy could help create opportunity for others ?

That question eventually blossomed into Seeds of Hope.

What began as a little garden in our home has now reached communities far beyond its gates. Through Seeds of Hope, we’ve helped support school and community gardens in Ghana and the Dominican Republic, providing seeds, raised beds, tools, and most importantly, inspiration and encouragement. These gardens offer more than food. They offer dignity, self-sufficiency, beauty, and the simple reminder that hope, like a seed, can flourish when given the chance.

One of my favorite things about gardening is that every seed carries a promise. Tucked inside something so tiny is the potential for nourishment, beauty, and new beginnings.

The same is true in life.

A single choice made decades ago led me to a garden. The garden led me to a table. The table led me to a community. And that community continues to inspire opportunities to serve others.

Looking back, I realize that Le Petit Jardin was never just about flowers, herbs, or homemade goods. It has always been about cultivating connection ~ to the earth, to one another, and to the belief that even the smallest acts of care can create something meaningful.

After all, every garden begins with a seed.

And sometimes, the seeds we plant today become blessings we never imagined tomorrow.
